Randwick Comes Of Age

Randwick is more than just a racecourse. It is a microcosm of Sydney's growth. 

It is symolic of the good, bad, and ugly of city growth. Let's start with the good.

Randwick is a vibrant suburb. With it's location just a stones throw from Coogee beach, Bondi beach, and Maroubra beach, it offers beachside living that intersects all that South Sydney has to offer. Not a beach person? No, problem! It is also adjacent to Centennial Park, Bondi Junction shopping, and the city's main transport links.

In addition, Randwick boasts it's own boutique cafe's and shops, mixing city chic and suburban deli's. In fact, Randwick lacks very little, with hospitals, sports venues, and so much more. But does all of this come at a price? Yes.

What could possible be considered bad, given that Randwick is central to so many features? Two things spring to mind immediately: housing affordability and traffic. Popular city suburbs tend to command a high price when it comes to accomodation, and Randwick typifies this. Whilst there is a plethora of apartments, the prices are astronomical.

And, of course, traffic is a continuous headache. We tried to park near the beach and left defeated 40 minutes later. So, Randwick can be a disaster when it comes to timekeeping, but isn't that true of all big cities?

Inner city living has it's challenges.The locations are not just desirable for the upwardly mobile. They are also desirable to the less society friendly elements. Whilst there are much worse places to live, in terms of crime, be prepared for the inevitable anti-social elements that will be encoutered.

When it comes to accomodation, Randwick offers thousands of thousand of apartments. Many of these were built many years ago, so they lack the modern aesthetic appeal that modern architects incorporate as standard. So, in this way, the ugly of Randwick does extend to some of the housing, which despite, being ugly, still commands a very high price. And, believe me, as a Randwick window cleaner, I have seen just about every type of property that the suburb as to offer.

With all of the above, Randwick offers both incentives and drawbacks. The decision as to whether this area is for you comes down to balance. Carefully consider all of the benefits must be weighed against the negative factors, and whichever side tips the scales let's you know whether it is right for you!
