What to Wear if you are the Mother of the Bride or Groom

Weddings are a time of celebration, a time when two people who love each other, make a commitment in front of friends and family. A lot of planning goes into the big day, and part of that is what everyone in the wedding party or of key significance, is going to wear.

The bridal dress, the groom's suit, the bridesmaids, the groomsmen and then there is what the mother of the bride will wear and what the mother of the groom will wear. If you are looking for a mother dress for wedding party here are some tips on traditions, expectations, and style.

Even when the bride and groom are choosing unconventional options and themes there are still certain expectations you may want to meet, and traditions as the mother of either that you want to fulfill. The dress selection should have everyone in agreement on what the selection process will involve so everyone is happy with where they stand. Both mother of the bride and mother of the groom should talk to the bride about what she wants to see with lots of time in advance so that alterations to the mother wedding dress can be made or special additions put on.

Here are some tips on what to consider for the wedding mother dresses.

1. Neither mother should be wearing white. That is the color reserved for the bride only on that day. Black is also not considered appropriate because it is too dark in theme and is worn for mourning not celebrating, for traditionalists it is bad luck!

2. Choose your dresses after the bride and bridesmaids have chosen their dresses so that you can make sure you are not wearing the same colors but still something that compliments them. Some choose to wear a color that is a few shades lighter than them. Traditionally the mother of the bride decides on a dress before the mother of the groom, but there is no reason why that cannot be done together if you want to dress in similar styles or colors.

3. When choosing a mother dress for wedding party cues need to be taken from the bridal gown. A mother dress should not be a lot shorter than the bride's, handbags and hats and other accessories should be coordinated.

4. Take into consideration the season of the wedding. When having a summer wedding a lighter dress with a sheer sleeve jacket is great. In winter it might be something more heavy like a crocheted jacket over a long sleeved dress.

5. A mother dress for wedding party should not overpower or outshine the bride. It should be complementary not in competition. But both mothers should be comfortable and happy in their dresses with a flattering silhouette and something that is age appropriate.
