General Skilled Migration

The new visa migration program will now require applicants to obtain a pass mark of 65 in order to receive an invitation to apply for the following visa subclasses:

Skilled-Independent (Permanent) (Class SI) Subclass 189

Skilled-Nominated (Permanent) (Class SN) Subclass 190

Skilled-Regional Sponsored (Provisional) (Class SP) Subclass 489

The points required have risen from 60-65

Although this is generally seen as an attempt to simply make the application process more difficult, the government has found that increasing the minimum points needed to pass was that having so many individuals submitting their applications many would have to wait for long periods of time before their application was processed and approved.

In an attempt to fast-track the application process for overseas migrants to claim visas, the threshold has been increased from 60-65 for skilled independent, nominated and regional sponsored visa categories.

Your pathway to General Skilled Migration

The visas stated above belong to an initiative by the government known as SkillSelect. This program allows a skilled person to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) when they have become committed to gaining an Australian visa. The EOI will include information about your skills and other attributes before issuing you with an invitation to apply for migration, based on the ranking of your attributes.

SkillSelect will also provide certain State/Territory government staff and Australian employers to view the relevant information from your Expression of Interest, and helps them identify who they may nominate to gain employment and meet labour market needs in the Australian workforce.

SkillSelect involves a 3 stage process:

A migrant’s details of qualifications, experience, English language proficiency and various other factors included in your EOI will be assessed.

Migrants with sufficiently ranked points will be invited to make an application or may be nominated/sponsored by an Australian employer.

When all criteria of the assessment is approved and granted, intending migrants can make a visa application.

Skilled Partner age limit lowered for Australian permanent visas

The latest changes to the skilled permanent visa reveals that the maximum age of a skilled partner has been lowered from 50 years of age to 45, for an applicant can claim additional points in the general points test.

Previously, general skilled visa applicants whose spouses and de facto partners were under 50 years of age could claim an additional five points.

The changes introduced will apply to the Skilled Independent visa Subclass 189 and Subclass 190 and Skilled Regional Subclass 489, as of 1 July 2018.

Although these changes have made it more difficult for applicants over the age of 45 to skilled permanent visas, there are still various paths to take, to ensure you gain the visa you desire.

Visa fees increase

Hoping to generate $410 million dollars over a four-year period from 2017 to 2021, the Australian government has increased fees on some visas.

As you can see in the table above, the visa price increases range dramatically across each subclass.

The student visa and temporary graduate visa have increased by $15 and $35, but the classes of partner visas and business skills visas have each been raised by $160.

On the positive side, these increases only apply to the first instalment of the visa application fee for primary and secondary applicants, while the second instalment of the visa fee remains unchanged.
