One Thousand Unique Islands to Discover

One Thousand Islands. One day. Welcome To The Buccaneer Archipelago.

Located on the remote Western Australian coast, north of Dampier, the Buccaneer Archipelago can only be reached by helicopter, float plane, private yacht or cruise. But because of how remote these islands are, they are in almost unspoiled condition.

A boat cruise is one of the best ways to explore the region – you get to experience not only the various islands that make up the Archipelago, but you’ll see up close what makes each individual island so amazing. Some islands feature patches of rainforest, others are surrounded by mangrove; and you’ll have the chance to spot birds and other wildlife, including estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles. And those ocean colours you think you can only dream about? The Buccaneer Archipelago has them.

The coral reefs that fringe the islands are quite diverse and certainly offer a lot of potential to view a variety of animals. With seagrass beds and mangroves, there is an abundance of marine life to be spotted, including the Australian humpback dolphins that can be found frolicking in the currents and whirlpools of the Horizontal Falls.

It is simply an amazing area – the rocks surrounding the islands are over 2 billion years old, the surrounding coastline the same. It is often wondered how so many islands were formed. They aren’t as old as the rocks in the area but were formed from rising sea levels which created a drowned coastline as such. The islands tend to be quite rocky, some with very high cliffs.

The Buccaneer Archipelago is quite large – it covers over 50 square kilometres and has between 800—1000 individual islands. Sitting at the head of King Sound, the islands sit between King Sound and Collier Bay. With a massive tidal range of over 10 metres, the Archipelago is home to the popular Horizontal Falls.

The Horizontal Falls have been described as one of the greatest wonders of the natural world and we tend to agree. These falls form in a break between the McLarty Ranges, which is up to 25 metres in width in some sections. As the tide rises, a waterfall is formed on the opposite side, creating a waterfall. As the tide changes, the directions of the falls change, creating tidal whirlpools which just have to be seen.

The Horizontal Falls Marine Park, or Lalang-garram is an area of immense cultural significance. As you travel through the park, you may spot some of these sites including middens, stone arrangements, significant camping beaches and area, and important mythological areas.

Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures run the only permanent tourist operation in the marine park. Our seven-hour day trip into the Buccaneer Archipelago can only be described as action packed. You’ll experience riding a luxury cruiser through the Archipelago where you can take in the wonder of the islands and learn about the local history and customs of the traditional owners from an experienced guide. You will also get to experience a low-level flight taking in the islands from the sky on our seaplane, and then ride through the Horizontal Falls with one of our experienced skippers.

Enjoy a cruise through the bays and nearby creeks, feast on a barramundi BBQ lunch, swim in the croc and shark safe pool and snorkel with the fish in clear waters (and then feed them). Check out everything on offer during our day trip through the Buccaneer Archipelago.

On top of this, with a full day tour from Broome, you can experience something truly unique and rare. The Cape Leveque itinerary allows you to visit the world-renowned “Kooljaman” wilderness camp at Cape Leveque. Owned and run by the Bardi Jawi communities, this wilderness camp is known for its amazing diversity and pristine and unique landscapes. Enjoy a meal, walk along the white beaches and take in the contrast of the ancient red cliffs meeting the crystal blue Indian Ocean.

It doesn’t stop here. Visit the Aquaculture Hatchery at One Arm Point for a tour and insights into the Bardi Jawi saltwater culture, sustainable aquaculture production and the local marine life. We can guarantee you will be amazed by the stunning views and will walk away with a new understanding and appreciation for our local indigenous cultures.

Whether you start your day in Broome or in Cape Leveque, a day trip through the Buccaneer Archipelago and the Horizontal Falls is a must do when in Western Australian.  We’d love to welcome you aboard!
