What is Pre-wedding Photography?

What is Pre-wedding Photography?

We often get this question from our couples: what is pre-wedding photoshoot? How is it different from my wedding day photography?

First of all, we have to make it loud and clear that pre-wedding, or engagement photoshoot is definitely not compulsory. Actually nothing of a wedding is compulsory, because there is no such thing as a “proper wedding”. At The Lacy Day, we are always dedicated to helping our couples to break out of the formality and think creatively for their own wedding.

Now let’s move on to why pre-wedding photoshoot is not a bad thing to consider and how it differs from wedding day photography.
1. Good Practice Before Wedding
Many people only get married once (no judging here if you have already done it many times before) and it is stressful since you are only going to do it once, there is no room for mistake. Having a pre-wedding photoshoot is like having a rehearsal before the wedding. Especially if you are having the same photographer for your wedding day, it is going to be a good opportunity to discuss the photography style by having a test run together. By the time of your wedding, you are going to feel more prepared with the cameras knowing what to expect.
2. More Location Options and Bridal Styles
Pre-wedding photoshoot, in formality, is quite similar to a location shoot (typically between ceremony and reception). The biggest difference between them is that you have less restriction in terms of location options, costumes, and makeup & hair styling with engagement photoshoot. Wedding day can sometime be rushed because too many things need to be fit into one day or even just a few hours, which means you are not going to have much time for your location shoot (typically 2 hours maximum). And your location choice will have to be somewhere near or in between your ceremony and reception venues.

With pre-wedding photography session, you will be able to go nuts with the location as long as your budget allows. The most popular spot is obviously somewhere the Opera House can be seen, for example Bradley Head, Hickson Road, or Kirribilli. But if you are already going to have a modern wedding somewhere in the city and you are looking for somewhere more rustic for your engagement portraits, Hunter Valley, Blue Mountain area, or Kangaroo Valley might as well be something nice to consider.

Besides more freedom with the locations, you will also be able to select up to 7 designer wedding gowns at our wedding boutique for your pre-wedding shoot. Our makeup artist will follow up during the whole trip for packages over 5 hours to touch up on bride’s makeup and change hair styles.
3. Just Have Fun
The Lacy Day is always about having fun, sophisticated, and highly personalised experiences. We encourage our couples to do what they cannot do on their wedding day. For example taking pictures with their dog, or even with a horse or alpaca (yes you CAN take wedding pictures with alpaca, please email us for more information).

Coming up with a theme is another fun thing to do. Setting up a picnic scene at Centennial Park, hiring some vintage or boho furnitures for some country style shoots at a farm, hiring a boat, literally nothing is impossible.
